John Greyson Welch

I'm John Greyson Welch (but you can call me Greyson).  I am a visual storyteller with almost 20 years of experience in the video and multimedia field.  After studying Telecommunications and Film at the University of West Florida, and working for the local PBS and ABC affiliates respectively, I moved to Boston's North Shore in 1999.  My history within the industry is varied with regard to it's scope.  I have been fortunate enough to have worked in a number of roles for various productions, which has given me what I regard as a wholistic approach to production.

My love affair with the camera began with black and white still photography as an adolescent, learning from my mother who was an avid photographer.  The time I spent in dark rooms making prints cultivated my love of process, and experimentation.  My fascination with moving images seemed a logical outgrowth of my experience as a student of photography, and my abiding love for television and film.

Over the years I have shot on a number of formats from 8mm film to HDR 4K.  I learned tape to tape editing on 3/4 inch analogue tape in college, editing student news packages and short-form documentary work.  Non-linear editing was a revelation that changed everything, and my introduction to Avid Media Composer was a gateway to discovering a new process.  Although I use a host of different applications for various aspects of post, I keep returning time and again to Adobe's Creative Cloud Suite, as the tools have become increasingly powerful and transparent.

I enjoy shooting and editing equally, I would say.  One informs the other-- I view the two as inextricably linked.  I know what kind of coverage will be needed in post, and endeavor to shoot accordingly when I am on location.  The reverse is also true, my strength as an editor is enriched by my ability to frame and compose shots, and to manage the myriad factors which coalesce into moving images.  The tools are becoming more powerful and more accessible, which makes this a particularly exciting time to be a content creator.  The medium, of course, should not be confused for the message-- ultimately the focus is compelling storytelling, and it is my aim and privilege to create exactly that.
